The ex-Super Eagles and Rayo Vallecano keeper Wilfred Agbonavbare passed away in Spain


48 Years Wilfred Agbonavbare had been terminally ill with cancer  he died  on Tuesday morning in a hospital in Spain. The Former Nigeria goalkeeper and  ex-Rayo Vallecano goalkeeper  played professionally for Rayo Vallecano between 1990 and 1996 while also representing Nigeria where he won the Africa Cup of Nations as a squad member in 1994.



He was also on the team that qualified and played Nigeria’s first ever World Cup at USA 94 where they reached the second round. Rayo Vallecano announced the death on their website this morning and stated that the former goalkeeper died at the Prince of Asturias Hospital in Alcala de Henares.The club had recently tried to raise funds for his treatment when it became known that he was suffering from terminal illness. Agbonavbare is survived by three sons.


The Nigeria Football Federation has not yet released a message of condolence as at the time of filing this report. As soon as we have more information in regards to burial arrangements we will keep you posted 

It is the second death in the past few days in Nigerian football as former U17 coach Musa Abdullahi also passed away.
